I'm not a big fan of caramel. Is there a way to make this cake without the caramel sauce?

This recipe calls for a lot of sugar. Is there a way to reduce the amount of sugar without sacrificing the flavor?

I'm allergic to nuts, so I'm wondering if I can substitute the walnuts in this recipe with something else.
