  • Combine melted butter, sugar and vanilla in large mixing bowl.
  • Add eggs one at a time; mix each in evenly before adding the next one.
  • Add cocoa in 1/4 cup measures, dumping into a sieve and shaking into bowl to ensure no cocoa-y lumps. Make sure cocoa is well integrated before adding next 1/4 cupful.
  • Add flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
  • Add nuts and chocolate morsels and work well into batter.
  • Pour batter into pan and shake, shake, shake to make sure everything settles.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until brownies begin to pull away from sides of the pan.
  • Cool at least 20 minutes before trying.
  • Top should be crunchy and brownie should be warm and gooey.

Tips:

  • Use unsweetened cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • To make sure the brownies are cooked through, insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, they're done.
  • Let the brownies cool completely before cutting them into squares. This will help them hold their shape.
  • For a fudgy brownie, use more butter and chocolate and less flour.
  • For a cakey brownie, use less butter and chocolate and more flour.
  • To add a little extra flavor, try adding nuts, chocolate chips, or dried fruit to the batter.

Conclusion:

Grandma's old-fashioned brownies are a classic dessert that is sure to please everyone. With their rich chocolate flavor and chewy texture, they're the perfect treat for any occasion.
