GLUHWEIN (MULLED WINE)

Gluhwein (Mulled Wine) image

This very easy recipe comes from Winemaker magazine. I liked it because I had all of the ingredients on hand, it is really fast, and because it warmed me up and helped alleviate the symptoms of the cold I had at the time. According to the recipe source, the mixture can be kept warm in a crockpot, or on a coffee warmer (covered) for several hours, and can be successfully reheated the next day. (Mine never lasted long enough for me to testify to the above statement.)

GLUEHWEIN

Gluehwein image

Gluehwein is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. After you come in out of the snow, it is supposed to make you glow with warmth again. Watch it: Since you drink this wine warm, the alcohol goes to your head extra quick! Drink when you really have come in, and do not have to go out again! This is the one my father used to make for New Year's Eve.

Tips:

  • Select the right wine: For a classic mulled wine, choose a fruity red wine with a medium body and low tannins. Some good options include Pinot Noir, Merlot, or Zinfandel. For a white mulled wine, try a Riesling or Gewürztraminer.
  • Use fresh spices: Freshly ground spices will give your mulled wine the best flavor. Some classic spices to use include cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. You can also add other spices like cardamom, star anise, or orange peel to taste.
  • Sweeten to taste: Mulled wine is traditionally sweetened with sugar or honey. However, you can also use other sweeteners like maple syrup, agave nectar, or stevia. Add the sweetener to taste, starting with a small amount and adding more until you reach the desired sweetness.
  • Garnish with citrus: A slice of orange or lemon is a classic garnish for mulled wine. The citrus adds a bright, fresh flavor to the drink and also helps to balance out the sweetness.
  • Serve warm: Mulled wine is best served warm, but not boiling. The ideal serving temperature is around 160-180°F (70-80°C). You can reheat the mulled wine over low heat if it gets too cold.

Conclusion:

Mulled wine is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for enjoying during the holiday season. With its warm, spicy flavor and inviting aroma, it's sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering. So gather your friends and family, and enjoy a glass of this classic holiday beverage!
