Categories     side-dish

Time 15m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 (16-ounce) cans baked beans, drained (recommended: Bush's)
1/2 cup chili sauce (recommended: Heinz)
1/4 cup bourbon (recommended: Jim Beam)
1/4 cup real bacon pieces (recommended: Hormel)
1 tablespoon molasses (recommended: Grandma's)
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to medium and continue boiling for 10 minutes. Serve hot.

Tips:

  • Prep the Beans: Before cooking, rinse and sort the beans to remove any debris or damaged beans. For best results, soak the beans overnight or for at least 8 hours to reduce cooking time and improve their texture.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: Opt for high-quality ingredients like fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs, and flavorful bacon to elevate the dish.
  • Brown the Bacon: Rendering the bacon slowly over medium heat allows it to release its flavorful fat and enhances the overall taste of the beans.
  • Sauté the Vegetables: Sautéing the onions, celery, and green bell pepper in the bacon fat adds a layer of savory flavor to the beans.
  • Choose the Right Beans: This recipe calls for Great Northern beans, but you can also use other varieties like navy beans or pinto beans.
  • Use Stock or Water: The choice of liquid depends on your preference. Using chicken or vegetable stock adds more depth of flavor, while water provides a neutral base.
  • Season Generously: Don't be shy with the seasonings. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme to enhance the natural flavors of the beans.
  • Bake on Low Heat: Baking the beans at a low temperature for an extended period allows them to develop a rich and complex flavor.
  • Stir Occasionally: Stir the beans occasionally during baking to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.

Sandra Lee's Sheboygan baked beans are a classic American comfort food dish that combines the smoky flavor of bacon, the sweetness of brown sugar, and the heartiness of beans.
