RED WINE APPLESAUCE

Categories     Condiment/Spread     Sauce     Side     Apple

Yield 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 Granny Smith apples (about 2 1/2 pounds)
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup dry red wine
3 tablespoons creme de cassis
Pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Peel and core apples; cut into large wedges and combine in saucepan with all other ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil and simmer, covered, 15 minutes or until tender. Remove cover and simmer until most liquid is evaporated, about 5 more minutes. Mash with a potato masher, leaving some chunks. Transfer to a bowl and chill overnight.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For the best applesauce, use a firm, tart apple that holds its shape well, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp.
  • Peel and core the apples: Before cooking the apples, peel and core them to remove the skin and seeds.
  • Use a slow cooker: A slow cooker is a great way to make applesauce because it allows the flavors to develop slowly and evenly. You can also use a pot on the stovetop, but be sure to cook the apples over low heat so they don't burn.
  • Add spices and sugar to taste: Once the apples are cooked, add spices and sugar to taste. Common spices used in applesauce include cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. You can also add a little bit of lemon juice or zest for a brighter flavor.
  • Serve warm or cold: Applesauce can be served warm or cold. It's a great addition to breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can also use it as a filling for pies, cakes, and other desserts.

Conclusion:

Applesauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It's easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Whether you like it sweet, tart, or spiced, there's an applesauce recipe out there for you. So next time you're looking for a healthy and delicious snack or side dish, give applesauce a try.
