THREE-BEAN BAKED BEANS (OVEN OR CROCK POT)

Three-Bean Baked Beans (Oven or Crock Pot) image

This is my summer time dish for all BBQ's and I always double the recipe. If you enjoy baked beans you have to try this one. It's from a '98 TOH and whenever I make it someone always asks for the recipe. I have personally never made it in the oven since the crock pot does just fine and who wants to heat up the house in the summer? When using the crock pot I will take the lid off for the last hour or so (+/-) of cooking - this will thicken it up if you like your beans thick right at serving. Leftovers freeze very well.

REAL OLD FASHION OVEN BAKED BEANS

Real Old Fashion Oven Baked Beans image

Doctored-up "canned beans" are OK if you're in a hurry...I've done it more than once, but for REAL Baked Beans, give these a try! The aroma of them baking in the oven is heavenly!!! A stoneware bean pot is preferred, but you can use a small covered roaster or casserole if need be. My Dad always used lean salt pork, but I prefer to use a good smoked bacon.

  • • 5 cans of pork and beans (15 ounce cans - VanCamps's Pork and Beans or similar).
  • • 2 medium or 1 large onion, chopped (yellow or sweet onion, not vidalia).

  • Preheat oven to 325* F. degrees f. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Saute onions over medium to medium-high heat in butter until onions are tender and translucent.
  • Mix beans, sauteed onions, ketchup, mustard, molasses and brown sugar until blended well. Pour in prepared baking dish. Top with uncooked bacon in single layer (see photo above). Bake on middle rack of oven uncovered for 2-3 hours. Beans are ready when the top is dark and caramelized. Serve warm. Enjoy!
  • TIP - Make in Slow Cooker.
  • These can also be thrown together and cooked in the slow cooker set on low for 6 to 8 hours as well. It won't get that nice caramelize top, but it will still be delicious if you're in a pinch for time. Be sure to saute the onions first.

This recipe has served by family for 29 years and originally came from my mother-in-law. It tastes great served with fresh cornbread or biscuits and honey. Although you need to allow time for soaking and simmering the beans, this recipe is still quite easy.".

In a mixing bowl; mix all the beans and the B.B.Q. sauce, and veggies. Pour the bean mixture in the bacon lined Dutch oven. Lay the bacon over the top of the beans in the reverse direction as you put them in. Made a neat pinwheel. Place lid on oven with 18 to 20 charcoals in top, and only 8 to 10 under the oven. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until bacon is crisp. Let cool 10 to 15 minutes, and serve.

FASSOLIA GIGANTES PLAKI (GIANT BEANS BAKED IN THE OVEN)

Fassolia Gigantes Plaki (Giant Beans Baked in the Oven) image

Make and share this Fassolia Gigantes Plaki (Giant Beans Baked in the Oven) recipe from Food.com.

Provided by _Pixie_

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 1h30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

500 g Greek fassolia gigantes (butter beans)
1 kg tomatoes
160 ml olive oil
280 g onions, finely sliced
1 tablespoon tomato puree
3 cloves garlic, peeled & finely sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
salt and black pepper
3 tablespoons parsley, finely chopped
1 tablespoon oregano
1 teaspoon thyme

Steps:

  • Pick the beans clean from stones and grit and soak them in cold water overnight.
  • Drain and rinse them in a colander, put into a large saucepan or a pressure cooker, cover with plenty of cold water and boil them until they are cooked but still a little hard.
  • This type of bean cooks quickly, so be aware until you get used to them.
  • They take hardly 2 minutes in a pressure cooker and about 30-40 minutes otherwise.
  • If they get overcooked, they get mushy and soggy and they do not taste at their best.
  • This first step then is also the most important in this recipe.
  • Drain the beans through a colander and keep aside.
  • In the same saucepan, heat the olive oil and fry the onions, the garlic and the dried herbs, until they start turning pale golden.
  • Add the tomatoes with all the juice from the cans or, if fresh tomatoes are used, add 150 ml water.
  • Then add the tomato puree and sugar, break up the mixture with a fork, season with salt and pepper, cover and cook for 30 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
  • Mix the parsley into the tomato sauce, add the beans and mix well.
  • Spread the beans in an oven dish.
  • Sprinkle a little oregano and black pepper on the top and cook in a pre-heated oven at 350 grades F/ 80 grades C, for 30 minutes, without stirring, until they look slightly crisp on top and quite dry.
  • Alternatively, add the beans to the tomato sauce, mix well, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Tips:

  • Soak the beans overnight: Soaking the beans overnight helps to soften them and reduce the cooking time. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 2 minutes, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of beans: Don't be afraid to mix and match different types of beans in your baked bean recipe. Some popular options include kidney beans, navy beans, black beans, and pinto beans.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables add flavor and nutrition to baked beans. Some good options include onions, celery, carrots, and bell peppers.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is what really makes baked beans special. There are many different recipes for baked bean sauce, so feel free to experiment until you find one that you like. Some popular ingredients include ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and molasses.
  • Cook the beans until they are tender: Baked beans should be cooked until they are tender but still hold their shape. The cooking time will vary depending on the type of beans you are using and how long you soaked them.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a classic comfort food that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like them sweet, savory, or spicy, there is a baked bean recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give baked beans a try.
