2 tablespoons shortening
1 ½ cups white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 pinch salt
1 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Cream shortening with sugar. Mix in eggs. Dissolve soda in milk, and add to the creamed mixture. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, and salt. Stir in nuts.
  • Pour batter into a 3 pound coffee can, or several 1 pound soup cans; fill containers 1/2 to 3/4 full.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until a tester inserted in the center of loaf comes out clean.

2 ½ cups half-and-half
8 egg yolks, beaten
1 cup white sugar
2 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
2 bananas
¾ cup half-and-half
1 cup walnuts

Steps:

  • Heat 2 1/2 cups of the half-and-half in a large saucepan over medium heat until small bubbles begin to form around the edges. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Mix the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl until smooth. While stirring, slowly pour the half-and-half into the egg mixture. Transfer the mixture to the saucepan and heat again over medium heat until bubbles begin to form around the edges. Remove from heat and return to the bowl. Stir in the heavy whipping cream.
