Time 1h35m

Yield about 5 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Time 1h

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

8 cups sliced green apples
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 cup honey
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted

Steps:

  • Put apples in a greased/buttered shallow pan or baking dish.
  • Combine remaining ingredients and mix to a crumbly consistency - sprinkle crumb mix over apples.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until apples are tender.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that will hold their shape when baked.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and caramelize nicely.
  • Use good quality honey: A dark, robust honey like buckwheat or clover honey will add a lot of flavor to the topping.
  • Don't overcrowd the baking dish: The apples should be in a single layer so that they can cook evenly.
  • Bake the topping until it's golden brown and bubbly: This will ensure that the apples are cooked through and the topping is caramelized.
  • Serve the topping warm: It's best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, but it can also be made ahead of time and reheated.

Conclusion:

This honey apple topping is a delicious and versatile recipe that can be used on a variety of desserts. It's perfect for pies, cakes, ice cream, and even pancakes. The apples are tender and caramelized, and the honey adds a subtle sweetness that complements the tartness of the apples. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy topping or something special to impress your guests, this honey apple topping is sure to please.
