An impressive cheese roll is easy to make when you use cream cheese, dried fruit and goat cheese. The nutty coating is a nice complement.

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese
1 tablespoon red currant or apple jelly
1/4 cup chopped dried calimyrna figs
1/4 cup chopped dried apricots
2 ounces crumbled chèvre (goat) cheese
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
40 assorted crackers

Steps:

  • Place cream cheese between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Roll into 9x6-inch rectangle with rolling pin. Remove top sheet of wrap. Carefully spread jelly over cream cheese. Sprinkle with figs and apricots to within 1/2 inch of edges. Sprinkle with cheese.
  • Using bottom sheet of wrap to help lift and starting at a long side, carefully roll up cheese mixture into a log. Carefully press walnuts into outside of log, rolling slightly to cover all sides. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 2 hours to set.
  • To serve, place roulade on serving plate. Sprinkle with chives. Serve with crackers.

This is posted for a request. It's from a cookbook I use often-The Aust. Women's Weekly Barbecue Book-though i've never made this cheese roll. I'm only guessing at prep time, and in the blurb, it says it can actually be made up to 4 days ahead to allow the flavours to really develop.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup chopped mixed dried fruit
1/4 cup chopped mixed glace fruit
2 tablespoons port wine
1 (250 g) packet cream cheese
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
3/4 cup poppy seed

Steps:

  • Combine fruits in bowl, add port, cover and allow to stand for 1-2 hours.
  • Beat softened cream cheese and cheddar together in electric mixer, stir in rind and fruit mixture.
  • Refrigerate covered for 1 hour.
  • Roll mixture into a log shape about 20cm in length, roll in poppy seeds, cover and refrigerated 24 hours.
  • Serve with crackers.
