This sauce is a little on the tart side. If you prefer it sweeter, add more sugar to taste. Serve it as a condiment with roasted turkey or pork.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 medium onion, cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup dry red wine
1 12-ounce bag fresh cranberries
1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch dice
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
1/4 teaspoon curry powder
Juice and grated zest of 1 orange
1/3 cup dried currants

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine onion, sugar, and wine. Place over medium-high heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer, covered, 4 minutes.
  • Add all remaining ingredients except currants; cook until cranberries have popped, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in currants. Serve at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples. For a chunky sauce, use firm apples that hold their shape when cooked, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn.
  • Peel and core the apples. This will help the sauce cook evenly and prevent the skins from toughening.
  • Cut the apples into uniform pieces. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Use fresh cranberries. Fresh cranberries have a brighter flavor than frozen cranberries.
  • Add sugar to taste. The amount of sugar you add will depend on the tartness of the apples and cranberries.
  • Cook the sauce over low heat. This will help prevent the sauce from burning.
  • Stir the sauce occasionally. This will help prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Serve the sauce warm or cold. Chunky apple cranberry sauce is delicious served warm or cold. It can be served with roasted turkey, chicken, or pork, or it can be used as a topping for waffles, pancakes, or yogurt.

Conclusion:

Chunky apple cranberry sauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be served with a variety of meals. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With these tips, you can make the perfect chunky apple cranberry sauce for your next holiday gathering or potluck.
