WHOLE BERRY CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH WALNUTS

Categories     Condiment/Spread     Berry     Side     Christmas     Thanksgiving     Quick & Easy     Simmer

Yield 6-8 people

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups washed and picked over fresh cranberries (one 12 oz bag)
1 tsp grated orange zest
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Pick over and discard soft cranberries. Combine berries, water, maple syrup, sugar, orange juice and zest in large saucepan. Bring to boil and reduce to medium heat to cook berries about 10-12 minutes or until most have popped open. Remove from heat and skim off any foam that may have formed on top. Stir in the walnuts, then chill until set.

Tips:

  • Select fresh, ripe cranberries: Look for cranberries that are plump, firm, and deep red in color. Avoid any cranberries that are soft, bruised, or have blemishes.
  • Wash the cranberries thoroughly: Before using, rinse the cranberries under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a food processor or blender to chop the walnuts: This will help to create a fine, even chop that will distribute evenly throughout the sauce.
  • Toast the walnuts before adding them to the sauce: Toasting the walnuts will enhance their flavor and add a nutty aroma to the sauce.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed saucepan to make the sauce: This will help to prevent the sauce from burning and will ensure that it cooks evenly.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes: This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Stir the sauce occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan: Use a wooden spoon or spatula to stir the sauce gently.
  • Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool slightly before serving: This will allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
  • Serve the sauce warm or at room temperature: Cranberry sauce can be served with a variety of dishes, such as turkey, chicken, pork, and fish.

Conclusion:

Homemade whole berry cranberry sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it tart, sweet, or somewhere in between, this recipe has you covered. So next time you're looking for a delicious and festive addition to your holiday table, give this whole berry cranberry sauce a try.
