my son was in the Marine Corps - so this is my version on this 'classic dish' a simple recipe of ground beef. Serve this over mashed potatoes, english muffins or toast.

Categories     Beef

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 lb ground beef, 80/20 mix
1/2 c onion, chopped
4-6 white button mushrooms, sliced
1 1/2 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 c beef broth
1/2 - 3/4 c evaporated milk, can use 2% milk
sea salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • 1. Brown the ground beef in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, until meat is no longer pink. Add onion and mushrooms to mixture, saute. Drain excess fat and set aside. Melt the butter or margarine in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Slowly add the flour, stirring constantly, to form a brown roux. Pour in beef broth and milk, mixing well. Add ground beef, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve this dish over mashed potatoes, toast or english muffins.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: Fresh ingredients will give your SOS a better flavor and texture.
  • Don't overcook the beef: Overcooked beef will be tough and chewy. Cook it until it is just cooked through.
  • Use a good quality gravy: The gravy is the key to a good SOS. Use a gravy that is flavorful and has a good consistency.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables will add flavor and nutrients to your SOS. Try adding diced carrots, celery, and onions.
  • Serve over biscuits or mashed potatoes: SOS is traditionally served over biscuits or mashed potatoes. These dishes will help to soak up the gravy and make a delicious meal.

Conclusion:

SOS is an easy and delicious meal that is perfect for a quick and easy weeknight dinner. It is also a great way to use up leftover beef. With a few simple ingredients, you can make a tasty and satisfying meal that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy meal, give SOS a try!
