TURKEY CABBAGE BAKE

Turkey Cabbage Bake image

"I revised this old recipe by using ground turkey instead of ground beef (to make it healthier), by finely chopping the cabbage to improve texture and by adding thyme," explains Irene Gutz of Fort Dodge, Iowa. "Crescent rolls help it go together quickly, and it's often requested."

Yield 4.5 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb. Extra Lean Ground Turkey
1 Large Onion (chopped)
4 Garlic Cloves (minced)
1 Pepper (any color)
2 Tablespoons Cajun Spice
1 Tablespoon Broth (any kind)
1 Cabbage (chopped)
1 25 oz. jar of Tomatoe Sauce
1 cup white rice (raw)
Chopped Parsley (optional)

Steps:

  • Sautee ground turkey, garlic and onions with broth and Cajun Spice until the meat is done and onions are transparent. Add pepper and cook 3 minutes more. Add Salt and Pepper to taste. Mix all other ingredients together and add the meat and onion mixture. Place in casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees about 1 1/2 hours or until most of the liquid is cooked down. Every 30 minutes stir the casserole so the rice cooks evenly. Makes 4.5 servings.

Tips:

  • Choosing the Right Turkey: Opt for a fresh or thawed turkey that is fully defrosted before cooking. If using a frozen turkey, allow ample time for thawing in the refrigerator.
  • Preparing the Turkey: Remove the giblets from the turkey cavity and pat dry with paper towels. Season the turkey inside and out with salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs.
  • Cooking the Turkey: Preheat your oven to the desired temperature specified in the recipe. Place the turkey breast-side up in a roasting pan and cook uncovered for the recommended time, basting occasionally with the pan juices.
  • Adding Cabbage: Once the turkey is partially cooked, add the cabbage wedges to the roasting pan. Toss them with the pan juices and continue roasting until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  • Making the Sauce: While the turkey and cabbage are roasting, prepare the sauce according to the recipe. This may involve sautéing vegetables, adding broth or wine, and simmering until the sauce thickens.
  • Serving: When the turkey and cabbage are fully cooked, remove them from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before carving. Serve the turkey and cabbage with the prepared sauce and your desired sides.

Conclusion:

This versatile recipe offers a flavorful and hearty meal that combines the classic flavors of roasted turkey and cabbage. By following the tips mentioned above, you can ensure a perfectly cooked turkey, tender cabbage, and a delicious sauce that complements both. Whether you're hosting a special occasion dinner or simply seeking a comforting family meal, this turkey cabbage bake is sure to satisfy your taste buds and leave you with a memorable dining experience.
