GRANDMA DOT'S STUFFING BALLS

Grandma Dot's Stuffing Balls image

This is my must-have recipe for Thanksgiving, passed down to me by my grandmother. These delicious stuffing balls are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. She always used white bread for this recipe, but I like to use a nutty whole wheat bread for a little extra flavor.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
2 medium stalks celery, chopped (1 cup)
2 medium carrots, chopped (1 cup)
8 cups dry bread cubes (about 11 slices bread)
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley, if desired
2 tablespoons poultry seasoning or dried sage leaves
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
About 1/2 cup Progresso™ chicken broth (from 32-oz carton)

Steps:

  • In 10-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add onion, celery and carrots; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender.
  • In large bowl, mix bread cubes, parsley, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Add broth and butter-onion mixture, stirring until desired moistness (stuffing will become a little more moist during roasting because it will absorb juices from turkey).
  • Use to stuff 1 (14- to 18-lb) turkey. After stuffing turkey, place any remaining stuffing in 1- or 2-quart casserole that has been sprayed with cooking spray; cover and refrigerate. Bake stuffing in casserole with turkey for last 35 to 40 minutes of roasting time or until thoroughly heated.

Tips:

  • Utilize fresh ingredients for the best flavor and texture. Fresh turkeyberries add a unique, slightly tart flavor to the stuffing balls.
  • Use high-quality bread for a sturdier stuffing ball. Stale or dry bread will absorb too much moisture and become mushy.
  • Toast the bread cubes before adding them to the stuffing mixture. This will help them hold their shape better and add a slightly crispy texture.
  • Don't overmix the stuffing mixture. Overmixing will make the stuffing balls dense and heavy.
  • Chill the stuffing mixture for at least 30 minutes before forming it into balls. This will help the flavors meld and make the stuffing balls easier to handle.
  • Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to form the stuffing balls. This will help them all be uniform in size and shape.
  • Bake the stuffing balls in a preheated oven until they are golden brown and cooked through. This will take about 20-25 minutes.
  • Serve the stuffing balls immediately with your favorite gravy and roasted turkey.

Conclusion:

Turkeyberry stuffing balls are a delicious and unique twist on a classic Thanksgiving dish. With their slightly tart flavor and crispy texture, they are sure to be a hit with your family and friends. So next time you're looking for a new stuffing recipe, give these turkeyberry stuffing balls a try. You won't be disappointed!
