This dish offers a unique blend of textures and tastes, making it a perfect light lunch or satisfying side dish. The tuna apple salad features tender flaked tuna, crisp and juicy apple slices, crunchy celery, and a creamy mayonnaise dressing, all harmoniously combined to deliver a burst of flavors. With variations such as the tangy Dijon mustard dressing and the addition of sweet grapes or crunchy walnuts, this salad offers a versatile base for customization. Discover the perfect combination of ingredients to suit your palate and dietary preferences.

**Variations:**

* **Tuna Apple Salad with Dijon Mustard Dressing:** This variation adds a tangy and slightly spicy kick to the classic tuna apple salad. The Dijon mustard adds a sharp and flavorful dimension, balancing the sweetness of the apples and the mildness of the tuna.

* **Tuna Apple Salad with Grapes and Walnuts:** For a sweeter and crunchier twist, incorporate juicy grapes and crunchy walnuts into the salad. The grapes add a burst of sweetness, while the walnuts provide a delightful textural contrast to the soft tuna and crisp apples.

**Tips:**

* Use high-quality tuna for the best flavor and texture. Look for tuna that is packed in olive oil or water, as these options tend to be more flavorful and tender than tuna packed in vegetable oil.

* Choose crisp and juicy apples for a refreshing crunch. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice for tuna apple salad, as they provide a tart and slightly tangy flavor that complements the tuna well.

* Make sure the celery is finely diced so that it evenly distributes throughout the salad. This will help ensure that each bite has a balanced combination of flavors and textures.

* Adjust the amount of mayonnaise dressing to your liking. If you prefer a lighter salad, use less mayonnaise. If you enjoy a creamier texture, feel free to add more.

* Serve the tuna apple salad immediately after preparing it for the best flavor and texture. The salad can also be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

APPLE PECAN TUNA SALAD

Apple Pecan Tuna Salad image

I grew up eating tuna salad made with sour pickles, onions, and mayonnaise. When I married, my m-in-law made a delicious tuna salad with apples as one of the main ingredients. I LOVED it and began to use that recipe. My husband likes pecans (Texas' state nut) in everything, so I always add a handful, but they are optional. It's better to begin with the chopped apple so you can sprinkle lemon juice over the pieces to keep them from turning brown. I also prefer unpeeled apples. I am saying this makes 6 servings because we like THIN sandwiches. I also sometimes make my sandwich ingredients the night before because allowing to set a while makes the flavors blend.

Time 30m

Yield 6 sandwiches (thin), 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 small granny smith apple, unpeeled cored and chopped
1 tablespoon lemon juice (or however much needed to coat apple pieces)
1 (5 ounce) can tuna fish, drained (do not use foil packaged, too fishy)
2 celery ribs, cleaned and chopped
1 tablespoon onion, grated (sweet kind is best)
5 tablespoons mayonnaise (we like the flavor and texture of "Real" better than "Lite")
1/4 cup pecans, coarsely chopped (optional)
1 pinch sugar, to taste
1 pinch salt, to taste
12 slices whole wheat bread, sandwich sliced

Steps:

  • Chop unpeeled Granny Smith (or any tart, crunchy apple -- Fuji and Gala are also good).
  • Sprinkle lemon juice (fresh or bottled) over apples and toss to coat evenly.
  • Add drained tuna fish and flake, mixing with apples.
  • Add celery, onion, and mayonnaise. Amount of mayonnaise may be adjusted according to texture preference. More crumbly (less mayonnaise) is better to eat with a fork on a lettuce leaf. More "pastey" texture is better for sandwiches.
  • Taste, and add a pinch of sugar and salt if needed. (Some apples require a tiny bit of sugar).

A lovely tuna salad with a twist; it uses apples and light Italian dressing! I like to use Gala or Golden Delicious apples. I also like to serve this with potato chips on the side, but it holds its own if you choose to serve it solo. Enjoy!

APPLE AND CHEDDAR TUNA SALAD

Apple and Cheddar Tuna Salad image

Found this recipe on a Hellman's mayo coupon card. Sound delicious, light and refreshing. Posting here for safe keeping. When I make it, my preference would be to use the tuna in the foil packets (no draining necessary). Feel free to use your favorite brand of products. I suspect this would be good using chicken instead of tuna too or served over lettuce, etc :) If you try it, I hope you enjoy it!
