TONGAN COCONUT ROLLS

Tongan Coconut Rolls image

Our old neighbor was from Tonga and his wife made these rolls and would share with us because my husband lived in Hawaii for a couple of years and grew to love the food there. I sometimes make my own homemade rolls recipe #103547 or the frozen Rhodes rolls. If you use the frozen dough, let them rise completely and then pour the sauce over the top and bake according to the directions. Same with homemade rolls. Rise completely and then pour sauce on and bake as directed. These rolls are sweet. Prep time listed is only for combining the ingredients for coconut sauce.

Tips:

  • Mise en place: Before you start baking, ensure all your ingredients are measured, prepped, and ready to use. This will help you stay organized and prevent any scrambling during the baking process.
  • Fresh ingredients: Using high-quality, fresh ingredients will significantly enhance the flavor of your coconut rolls. Use freshly grated coconut and coconut cream for the best results.
  • Properly grease the baking dish: To prevent the coconut rolls from sticking, grease the baking dish thoroughly before pouring the batter. You can use butter, cooking spray, or parchment paper for this purpose.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter can result in tough, dense coconut rolls. Mix just until the ingredients are well combined to maintain a light and fluffy texture.
  • Be patient with the chilling time: Chilling the batter before baking is crucial for the success of this recipe. This step helps the flavors meld together and allows the batter to set, resulting in a more consistent and even bake.
  • Keep an eye on the rolls while baking: Coconut rolls can brown quickly, so keep a close watch on them during the baking process. Adjust the baking time as needed to prevent over-browning.
