TANGY SLOPPY JOES

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Beef Recipes     Brisket Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 tablespoon safflower oil
1 cup diced onion
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 can (14.5 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes, pureed
2 tablespoons dark-brown sugar
2 tablespoons apple-cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups shredded Wine-Braised Brisket
Toasted buns, for serving
Thinly sliced red onion, for serving
Fresh cilantro leaves, for serving

Steps:

  • In a skillet, heat oil over medium. Add onion and cook until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add tomato paste; stir 1 minute. Add pureed tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and 1 cup water. Simmer 10 minutes. Add brisket; toss to heat through. Serve on toasted buns, with sliced red onion and cilantro.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Ground Beef: Use a leaner ground beef (85% lean or higher) to reduce grease and excess fat. Ground chuck or sirloin are both good choices.
  • Brown the Beef Properly: Cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until it's evenly browned and no longer pink. This will help develop flavor and prevent the meat from becoming dry.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh vegetables and herbs will give your Sloppy Joes the best flavor. If possible, use ripe tomatoes, crisp celery, and sweet bell peppers.
  • Don't Overcook the Sauce: Simmer the sauce for just long enough to blend the flavors, about 15-20 minutes. Overcooking can make the sauce thick and pasty.
  • Serve on Toasted Buns: Toasted buns will help hold up to the sloppy filling and prevent them from getting soggy.
