Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 pound elbow macaroni
1/4 cup thinly-sliced prosciutto - (2 oz)
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups milk
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Salt to taste
Freshly-ground black pepper to taste
1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Cook the macaroni in plenty of salted water until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain and cool. Mix together the prosciutto, cream, milk, Parmesan and nutmeg. Add the macaroni and season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon into a 11- by 7 1/2-inch baking dish. Sprinkle grated Swiss cheese over the top. Bake at 400 degrees until the cheese is lightly browned, about 20 to 25 minutes. For a crustier top, place the dish under a broiler for a few minutes.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality cheese. The type of cheese you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your macaroni and cheese. Use a combination of cheeses that melt well, such as cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente. You don't want the macaroni to be too soft, or it will become mushy when you bake it.
  • Make a creamy sauce. The sauce is what makes macaroni and cheese so delicious. Use a combination of milk, butter, and flour to create a smooth and creamy sauce.
  • Season the sauce well. Don't be afraid to add salt, pepper, and other spices to the sauce. This will help to bring out the flavor of the cheese.
  • Add mix-ins. Macaroni and cheese is a great dish to customize. You can add cooked vegetables, meat, or seafood to the sauce. You can also top the macaroni and cheese with breadcrumbs or grated Parmesan cheese before baking.
