SWEET AND SOUR SEITAN

Sweet and Sour Seitan image

This is a tasty vegetarian version of a Chinese classic. You won't even be able to tell it isn't chicken! Seitan is made from wheat gluten and is very high in protein and low in fat. I recommend using a chicken-style variety.

Tips:

  • Choose the right seitan: Look for seitan that is firm and has a chewy texture. Avoid seitan that is too soft or mushy.
  • Use a slow cooker with a lid: This will help to keep the seitan moist and prevent it from drying out.
  • Add plenty of vegetables: This will help to bulk up the dish and make it more nutritious. Good choices include bell peppers, carrots, onions, and broccoli.
  • Use a good quality sweet and sour sauce: This is the key to making a delicious dish. You can either use a store-bought sauce or make your own.
  • Cook the seitan on low for 6-8 hours: This will allow the flavors to develop and the seitan to become tender.
  • Serve over rice or noodles: This is the traditional way to serve sweet and sour seitan, but you can also serve it with other sides, such as mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.

Conclusion:

Sweet and sour seitan is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover seitan. With a few simple ingredients and a slow cooker, you can create a flavorful and satisfying dish that the whole family will enjoy.
