SAILOR'S STEW
This is a hearty beef stew using beer and beef broth as its base. It's very yummy and I've never had any complaints about it. If you use older potatoes in this recipe they will break down better during cooking and thicken the sauce.

SWEDISH SAILOR STEW (SJöMANSBIFFGRYTA)
This is a very simple, typical Swedish family stew that delivers a taste that is oh so satisfying. Make it in an enameled cast iron casserole or other oven safe dish because this goes into a very hot oven for quite a while. All the liquid gets absorbed and the casserole becomes good and crusty - but delicious!

Steps:
- Cut beef into stew size pieces. Chop onion and carrots. The carrots should be chopped pretty thick. Fry beef and onion in a pot with some butter/oil until beef has gotten lightly browned. Pour a thin layer of flour over the beef and onion, stir. Pour in water so that it just covers the beef . Season with about 1.5-2 teaspoons of salt, 10-15 whole allspice and 5-7 bay leaves then add the carrots. Let simmer under lid for at least 1,5 hours. I prefer to let it simmer about 2-3 hours. Taste stew a few times while it simmers to check if additional seasoning is needed, or extra water needs to be added. Peel and boil potatoes. Add boiled potatoes just before serving.

Steps:
- 1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Toss all the ingredients except the beer into a large ovenproof casserole.
- 2. Pour the beer over the stew, cover, and cook until the meat is very tender, the potatoes are breaking apart, and the beer is absorbed, about 2 hours.
Tips:
- Choose the right cut of beef: Use a chuck roast or another tough cut of beef that will become tender when braised. If you use a leaner cut of beef, it may become dry and tough.
- Brown the beef before braising: Browning the beef adds flavor and helps to develop a rich, brown sauce.
- Use a variety of vegetables: This recipe calls for carrots, celery, and onions, but you can also add other vegetables such as potatoes, turnips, or parsnips.
- Use a good quality beef broth: The beef broth is the base of the stew, so it's important to use a good quality broth. Look for a broth that is low in sodium and has a rich beef flavor.
- Simmer the stew for at least 2 hours: The longer you simmer the stew, the more tender the beef will become. Aim to simmer the stew for at least 2 hours, or until the beef is fall-apart tender.
- Serve with your favorite sides: This stew is delicious served with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
Conclusion:
Swedish Sailors' Beef Stew is a hearty and flavorful stew that is perfect for a cold winter day. The beef is tender and fall-apart, and the vegetables are cooked to perfection. The stew is also very easy to make, and it can be made in a slow cooker or on the stovetop. Whether you are a seasoned cook or a beginner, you will love this recipe.
