SPICY TURKEY SLOPPY JOES

This is adapted from a recipe I found in the local newspaper. It's adapted to fit my low-sodium requirements and spiced up to add flavor!

Categories     Turkey

Number Of Ingredients 14

3-4 Tbsp olive oil
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 1/2 lb ground turkey
1 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1-2 tsp prepared horseradish
1 c no salt added ketchup
1 can(s) tomato paste, small
1/4 c mustard (spicy or specialty, preferred)
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (or more, if you like)
1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (or more, if you like)
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
burger or slider buns

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil, about 3-4 minutes. Add ground turkey and black pepper. Cook for 7-8 minutes, breaking up turkey into small pieces.
  • 2. Add ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, and horseradish, mixing well. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • 3. Add red wine vinegar. Serve on burger or slider buns. Makes enough for about four full-size sandwiches or eight sliders.

Tips:

  • To make your sloppy joes even more flavorful, try using a combination of ground turkey and ground beef or pork.
  • Be sure to brown the ground turkey well before adding the other ingredients. This will help to develop the flavor of the meat.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of chili powder and cumin to suit your taste. If you like things spicy, you can add more chili powder. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can use less.
  • For a healthier version of this recipe, use whole wheat buns and top them with plenty of fresh vegetables, such as lettuce, tomato, and onion.
  • If you're short on time, you can use a jar of your favorite sloppy joe sauce instead of making your own. Just be sure to doctor it up with some of the spices listed in this recipe.

Conclusion:

Spicy turkey sloppy joes are a quick and easy meal that the whole family will love. They're perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual gathering. Serve them on buns with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
