SPICY SOUTHWESTERN SLAW

Great topping for tacos--also a nice side dish for any type of Mexican or Tex-Mex entree! Hint: The measurements are approximate- I usually make this without any. You can use green or purple cabbage, or a combination of the two. Same goes for green or red bell peppers. For extra heat, use an additional jalapeno pepper.

SPICY JALAPENO COLE SLAW

Spicy Jalapeno Cole Slaw image

This slaw is great with anything BBQ'd or grilled. You are the captain of spice, you create the heat with the jalapenos you add in. You can actually leave them out and just use a drop or two of hot sauce or red pepper flakes or even a pinch of cayenne. However you make this, it's sure to be a hit! Note: I serve this in tortillas as a vegetable taco, or with meat. I also place some of the slaw on a plate and top with grilled steak, chicken, or catfish. So good!

Tips:

  • Choose the right jalapeños: For the best flavor and heat, use fresh, firm jalapeños that are deep green in color. Avoid jalapeños that are bruised or have blemishes.
  • Wear gloves when handling jalapeños: The capsaicin in jalapeños can irritate your skin, so it's important to wear gloves when handling them. If you do get capsaicin on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.
  • Remove the seeds and ribs from the jalapeños: This will help to reduce the heat of the slaw. If you want a spicier slaw, you can leave some of the seeds and ribs in.
  • Use a sharp knife to thinly slice the jalapeños: This will help to evenly distribute the flavor and heat throughout the slaw.
  • Add other vegetables to the slaw: This will help to add bulk and flavor to the slaw. Some good options include cabbage, carrots, and bell peppers.
  • Use a light dressing: A heavy dressing will overwhelm the flavor of the jalapeños. A simple vinaigrette or lime-based dressing is a good option.
  • Serve the slaw chilled: This will help to keep the slaw crisp and refreshing.

Conclusion:

Spicy jalapeño slaw is a delicious and refreshing side dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own personal taste. So next time you are looking for a new and exciting side dish, give spicy jalapeño slaw a try!
