Convenient (and relatively inexpensive) way to have chai 'lattes' at home. The cardamom can be a bit expensive; try looking in the bulk section of a health food store. If you need to buy a jar of it, don't worry - it will make several batches!

Time 20m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 1/2 cups water
1 stick cinnamon
1 (3 inch) fresh ginger, chopped
7 whole cardamom pods, crushed
2 whole star anise pods, crushed
5 whole cloves
1 teaspoon peppercorn
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)
10 regular-size bags black tea (or 10 teaspoons loose tea is best) or 10 green tea (or 10 teaspoons loose tea is best)
1/2-2/3 cup brown sugar (to taste)
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Prepare the spices and the tea; set aside. Bring the water to a boil and remove from heat. Add the spices and the tea bags then allow the mixture to steep for 15 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture into a 4-cup glass measuring cup or large bowl, discarding the spices. Add the sugar, honey and the vanilla and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the mixture into a jar and store in the refrigerator.
  • To serve, mix 1 part concentrate with 1 part milk or half-and-half. Heat for a warm beverage or pour over ice to enjoy cold.

Tips:

  • Use Fresh Spices: Use freshly ground spices for the best flavor. Pre-ground spices can lose their potency over time and won't provide as much flavor.
  • Adjust Ingredients to Taste: The amount of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper can be adjusted to suit your personal taste preferences. If you like a spicier chai, add more ginger and black pepper. If you prefer a milder chai, reduce the amount of these spices.
  • Experiment with Different Milks: Chai tea can be made with any type of milk, including dairy milk, almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk. Experiment with different milks to find the one you like best.
  • Sweeten to Taste: Add honey, maple syrup, or another sweetener to taste. You can also add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
  • Store Properly: The chai concentrate can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Conclusion:

This spiced chai concentrate is a delicious and versatile beverage that can be enjoyed hot or cold. It's perfect for a quick and easy breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up. The concentrate can also be used to make chai lattes, chai tea cocktails, and other creative drinks. With its warm and inviting flavor, this chai concentrate is sure to become a favorite in your home.

Bonus Tip:

  • Make a Chai Tea Latte: To make a chai tea latte, simply heat up some milk and froth it with a milk frother or whisk. Add a few tablespoons of the chai concentrate and stir to combine. Enjoy!
