Number Of Ingredients 9

5 lb red bliss potato, skin on, quartered
cold water
1 tablespoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
½ cup unsalted butter, 1 stick, cubed
½ cup heavy cream
1 small clove garlic, minced
½ cup sour cream
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon green onion, chopped, for garnish

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: Yukon Gold, Russet, or Red potatoes are great options for mashed potatoes because they have a creamy texture and hold their shape well.
  • Don't Overcook the Potatoes: Overcooked potatoes will become gummy. Cook them until they are tender but still slightly firm.
  • Use a Potato Ricer: A potato ricer is the best tool for getting smooth and fluffy mashed potatoes. If you don't have a potato ricer, you can use a food mill or a fork, but the results won't be as good.
  • Don't Add Milk or Cream Too Early: Adding milk or cream too early will make the mashed potatoes gluey. Wait until the potatoes are hot and fluffy before adding them.
  • Season to Taste: Season the mashed potatoes with salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add herbs, cheese, or other ingredients to create different flavors.

Conclusion:

Savory mashed potatoes are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. They are easy to make and can be customized to your taste. With a few simple tips, you can make perfect mashed potatoes every time.
