SAVORY, HERBED GRILLED CHEESE FRENCH TOAST

Savory, Herbed Grilled Cheese French Toast image

Just look at the photo--- need I say more?

Provided by TROY RAY

Categories     Other Side Dishes

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 14

8 slice french bread or sourdough bread, thickly sliced
BATTER
1/2 c buttermilk
2 eggs, at room temperature & well beaten
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp thyme, leaves, minced
1/2 tsp oregano, dried
1/4 tsp white pepper
1 pinch cayenne pepper
FILLING
1/2 to 3/4 c sharp cheddar, finely grated
1/4 to 1/2 c fontina cheese, finely grated
3 Tbsp parmigiano-reggiano, grated
2 Tbsp butter, unsalted at room temperature

Steps:

  • 1. In a casserole dish, combine the buttermilk, beaten eggs, salt, pepper, thyme, oregano and cayenne pepper.
  • 2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the softened butter, then fold in the grated cheese. Divide into four equal parts and spread on toast. Cover with an additional slice.
  • 3. Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium high heat.
  • 4. Dredge each sandwich in the batter, coating each side. Place in skillet and brown top and bottom and the cheese is melted; about 4 to 5 minutes per side.
  • 5. Serve with a beer and a steaming hot bowl of your favorite tomato soup. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread: Stale or day-old bread works best for French toast. This is because it will absorb the egg mixture more easily and result in a less soggy dish.
  • Use good quality ingredients: Fresh eggs, milk, and butter will make a big difference in the flavor of your French toast.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Cook the French toast in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan. This will help the bread cook evenly and prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: This will help the bread cook through without burning.
  • Serve the French toast immediately: French toast is best served hot and fresh. Top with your favorite toppings, such as butter, syrup, fruit, or whipped cream.

Conclusion:

Savory French toast is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With its endless topping possibilities, it's a great way to use up leftover bread and create a unique and flavorful meal. Whether you're looking for a classic French toast recipe or something a little more adventurous, you're sure to find something you'll love in this collection of recipes.
