Yield Makes 8 (appetizer) servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 refrigerated pie crust (half of 15-ounce package), room temperature
8 ounces Italian sweet sausages, casings removed
3/4 cup coarsely grated mozzarella cheese (about 3 ounces)
2/3 cup diced Italian salami (such as Genoa)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
4 large eggs
1/2 cup whole milk
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Unfold crust on work surface. Press together any cracks in dough to seal crust. Place crust in 9-inch-diameter tart pan with removable bottom; fold in excess dough and press, forming double-thick sides that extend about 1/4 inch above rim of pan. Pierce crust with fork. Bake crust 5 minutes; press with back of fork if crust bubbles up. Continue to bake until crust is golden brown, about 10 minutes. Set aside. Reduce oven temperature to 400°F.
  • Meanwhile, sauté sausages in heavy medium skillet over medium-high heat until brown, breaking into small pieces with back of fork, about 6 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer sausage to large bowl; cool. Add mozzarella, salami, Parmesan, and basil. Toss sausage mixture to blend. Spoon sausage mixture into prepared crust. Beat eggs, milk, and nutmeg in medium bowl to blend; season with pepper. Pour custard over sausage mixture in crust.
  • Bake tart until filling is set in center and golden brown on top, about 30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes and serve.

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb ground pork or turkey sausage, i used turkey.
1-1/4 c reduced-fat, shredded monterey jack cheese
1-1/4 c reduced-fat, shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 8 oz bottle lite ranch dressing
1 4-1/2 oz can chopped ripe olives, drained
1 tsp red pepper flakes
5 2.1 oz pkgs frozen mini phyllo tart shells, thawed

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 350. Spray a lg skillet w/ cooking spray. Cook sausage until no loger pink.
  • 2. In lg bowl, combine sausage, cheeses and next 3 ingredients, mix well.
  • 3. Fill each tart shell w/ a heaping tsp of filling. Place shells on lg baking sheet. Bake 8-10 min, or until cheese melts.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of cheeses. This will give your tarts a more complex flavor and texture. Try using a combination of hard and soft cheeses, as well as cheeses with different flavors, such as cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, and goat cheese.
  • Don't overcook the sausage. Overcooked sausage will be tough and dry. Cook the sausage until it is just cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  • Use a good quality puff pastry. This will make your tarts light and flaky. You can either make your own puff pastry or buy it pre-made.
  • Chill the tarts before baking. This will help the pastry to set and prevent the tarts from spreading too much in the oven.
  • Serve the tarts warm. Sausage cheese tarts are best served warm, when the cheese is melted and gooey. You can also serve them at room temperature, but they will not be as delicious.

Conclusion:

Sausage cheese tarts are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or main course. They are perfect for parties or potlucks, and they can also be made ahead of time and reheated. With a variety of flavors and textures, these tarts are sure to please everyone.
