SASSAFRAS TEA

Sassafras Tea image

A good ol timey, fine-tasting tea. A very unique blend of flavors. I've been making sassafras tea since I was little. Easy to make and worth the effort. A great country drink. Don't drink too often though as too much sassafras tea can be harmful. Prep time depends on how long it takes you to find 4 4' tall saplings :)

4 1/4 inches sassafras root, means 4 pieces sassafras root 1/4 " to 1/2-inch inch in diameter

Steps:

  • Gather or buy the sassafrass root. Wash roots and cut saplings off where they're green and where the root ends.
  • Bring water to a boil and add roots.
  • Simmer until the water is a deep brownish red (the darker the stronger -- I like mine strong).
  • Strain into a pitcher through wire and a coffee filter if you don't want any sediment.

  • Serve hot or cold (I like mine ice cold) with lemon and a sprig of mint.

NATIVE AMERICAN SASSY FRASSY TEA

Native American Sassy Frassy Tea image

This is a Native American Recipe taught to my great grandparents. Sassafras tea tastes like weak flavored root beer. Harvest, wash and dry out the roots of the red sassafras. This should be done in the spring before the sap starts to rise. Store once it is very dry You can purchase dried sassafrass root at Food Co Ops and...

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 3

4-6 stick red sassafras root
2 c water
2 Tbsp honey

Steps:

  • 1. Put the red sassafras root pieces into a sauce pan and add water. Bring to a boil for about 5 minutes (longer or shorter boiling time depending how strong you like it)
  • 2. Pour into two cups through a strainer. Add honey to sweeten if desired.
  • 3. This can be served hot or cold and tastes like a mild root beer.

Tips:

  • Choose Fresh Sassafras Roots: Use fresh sassafras roots for the best flavor and aroma. Fresh roots have a bright green color and a slightly sweet smell.
  • Clean Roots Thoroughly: Before using, clean the sassafras roots thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris. Scrub them gently with a brush under running water.
  • Cut Roots into Small Pieces: Cut the sassafras roots into small pieces, about 1-2 inches in length. This will help in extracting their flavor and aroma.
  • Use Filtered or Spring Water: Use filtered or spring water for brewing sassafras tea. Tap water may contain impurities that can affect the taste of the tea.
  • Bring Water to a Boil: Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan or kettle.
  • Add Sassafras Roots: Once the water boils, add the sassafras roots. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Strain the Tea: After simmering, strain the tea using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Discard the sassafras roots.
  • Add Sweetener (Optional): If desired, add a sweetener like honey, sugar, or maple syrup to taste.
  • Serve Hot or Cold: Sassafras tea can be served hot or cold. If serving cold, let it cool completely before refrigerating.

Conclusion:

Sassafras tea is a delightful and refreshing beverage that offers a unique flavor and aroma. Its traditional use in Native American culture has been widely recognized, and it continues to be enjoyed by many today. Whether you're looking for a caffeine-free alternative to coffee or tea, or simply want to try something new, sassafras tea is worth exploring. Experiment with different brewing methods and flavor combinations to find your perfect cup of sassafras tea. Enjoy responsibly and savor the taste of history with every sip!
