SAGE TURKEY THIGHS

Sage Turkey Thighs image

I created this for my boys, who love dark meat. It is more convenient than cooking a whole turkey and reminds me of our traditional Thanksgiving turkey that's seasoned with sage. -Natalie Swanson, Baltimore, Maryland

TURKEY THIGHS WITH MAPLE AND SAGE

Turkey Thighs With Maple and Sage image

Sometimes you just want the delicious flavor of turkey without having to deal with a whole huge bird! I came up with this recipe after a lot of trial and error and I'm very pleased. The flavors in maple syrup par very well with the seasonings.

Time 3h5m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 turkey thighs, with skin and bone about 5 lbs
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/4 cup maple syrup (not pancake syrup)
4 stalks celery
1 large onion, chopped
salt
fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375. Place the thighs in a baking dish and put the vegetables around and under. Season the turkey with the herbs, salt and pepper. Cover and bake for 2 hours. Turn oven up to 450,Uncover the turkey and brush on some maple syrup, bake for 15 minutes and then brush on some more maple syrup. Continue baking until the skin is golden and the juices run clear. Strain the vegetables out of the drippings and make gravy, if desired.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, high-quality turkey thighs: Look for thighs that are plump and have a light pink color. Avoid thighs that are bruised or have an off odor.
  • Use a sharp knife to remove the skin from the turkey thighs: This will help the seasoning to better penetrate the meat.
  • Season the turkey thighs generously with a mixture of sage, salt, and pepper: Be sure to rub the seasoning into the meat so that it is evenly distributed.
  • Sear the turkey thighs in a hot skillet until golden brown: This will help to seal in the juices and flavor.
  • Transfer the turkey thighs to a baking dish and add some chicken broth: This will help to keep the thighs moist during baking.
  • Roast the turkey thighs in a preheated oven until they are cooked through: The internal temperature of the thighs should reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the turkey thighs rest for a few minutes before serving: This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.

Conclusion:

Sage turkey thighs are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The combination of sage, salt, and pepper gives the turkey thighs a flavorful crust, while the chicken broth helps to keep them moist. These thighs can be served with a variety of sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a salad.
