1/2 lb macaroni
1 teaspoon butter
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 cup milk

Steps:

  • Boil macaroni in water until tender and drain thoroughly.
  • Stir in butter and egg.
  • Mix mustard and salt with 1T hot water, and add to milk.
  • Add cheese, leaving enough to sprinkle on top.
  • Pour into buttered casserole; add milk, sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes or until custard is set and top is crusty.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality cheese. The type of cheese you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your macaroni and cheese. A good quality cheddar cheese is a classic choice, but you can also experiment with other types of cheese, such as Gruyère, Gouda, or Parmesan.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente. You don't want the macaroni to be too soft or mushy, so cook it until it is just tender. This will help it hold its shape and prevent it from becoming a soggy mess.
  • Make a roux. A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that is used to thicken the cheese sauce. It is important to cook the roux until it is smooth and bubbly, but not browned. This will help to prevent the cheese sauce from curdling.
  • Add the cheese slowly. When you are adding the cheese to the sauce, do it slowly and gradually, whisking constantly. This will help to prevent the cheese from clumping together and ensure that it melts smoothly.
  • Season to taste. Once the cheese sauce is made, taste it and adjust the seasoning accordingly. You may need to add more salt, pepper, or other spices to taste.

Conclusion:

Ronald Reagan's macaroni and cheese is a classic comfort food dish that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With its creamy, cheesy sauce and tender macaroni, it is the perfect dish for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion. By following the tips above, you can make a macaroni and cheese that is sure to impress your family and friends.
