I don't remember where I got this recipe from. Add cinnamon or nutmeg, if desired. Serve in small tea or coffee cups, because it is very rich!

RICH (BUT LOW-CAL) VEGAN HOT CHOCOLATE

Rich (But Low-Cal) Vegan Hot Chocolate image

I mixed this up late on a cold rainy homework-y afternoon- and it was good, so I thought I'd keep it around ;-) Note: I put their amounts as "scant" but you could just be slightly generous with the other ingredients, if you use the full 2/3 c. each of liquid.

Provided by White Rose Child

Categories     Beverages

Time 6m

Yield 1 med-lg. mug, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

2/3 cup vanilla soymilk (scant)
2/3 cup water (scant)
1 tablespoon cocoa powder, sifted
2 teaspoons sugar
1/4-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
  • Heat over medium, watching carefully till it's bubbling. Turn down the heat to low and let it simmer very gently, mostly covered, for 3 minutes or so (say, while you fold that batch of laundry).
  • Pour into a cup and enjoy.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality chocolate: The type of chocolate you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your hot chocolate. Look for a chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70%.
  • Don't overheat the milk: Milk that is too hot will scorch the chocolate and give your hot chocolate a bitter flavor. Heat the milk until it is just simmering, then remove it from the heat.
  • Whisk constantly: Whisking the hot chocolate constantly will help to prevent the chocolate from clumping and will also help to create a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Add flavorings: You can add a variety of flavorings to your hot chocolate to create a unique and delicious drink. Some popular flavorings include vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and peppermint.
  • Top with whipped cream or marshmallows: Whipped cream or marshmallows are a classic topping for hot chocolate. They add a touch of sweetness and creaminess that perfectly complements the rich chocolate flavor.

Conclusion:

Hot chocolate is a delicious and comforting drink that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a rich and decadent hot chocolate that will warm you up on a cold day or satisfy your sweet tooth. So next time you're craving something sweet and chocolatey, give this hot chocolate recipe a try.
