Time 2h15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pkg 16 oz. green split peas
6 c boiling water
1 leftover ham bone with meat
1/4 lb diced ham; or more if desired. i used more!
6 c water, boiling
1 small onion diced
2 medium carrots diced
1 envelope chicken bouillion
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 or 2 pinch dried garlic grated

Steps:

  • 1. In a saucepan with a cover, boil the first 6 cups of water and stir in the dried peas. Boil a couple of minutes, stir, and then shut off the heat and cover it. Leave for an hour, to soften the peas. Strain and rinse with fresh water.
  • 2. Meanwhile, place the ham bone in a large 6-8 qt. kettle and add 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, add the garlic, onion, carrots and bouillion, and the cumin and turmeric. Cook stirring occasionally, turn down the heat.
  • 3. After removing the ham bone and after rinsing the peas add to the large pot, along with the chopped ham. Cover and simmer for about an hour, until peas are soft and season with pepper if desired. It makes a fine lunch or light supper on a cold day.
