McMillan Bread Pudding image

2 large eggs, room temperature
4 cups 2% milk
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
2 loaves (1 pound each) day-old Italian bread, cut into 1-inch pieces
STREUSEL:
1 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Sweetened whipped cream, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, whisk the first 7 ingredients until blended. Gently stir in bread; let stand until bread is softened, about 15 minutes. , Transfer to 2 greased 13x9-in. baking dishes. Bake until puffed, golden, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, 30-35 minutes. In a small bowl, mix streusel ingredients; sprinkle over tops. Bake until golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. , Serve warm, with sweetened whipped cream, if desired.
