DEUTSCH ZWIEBELKUCHEN (ONION PIE) image

This is an onion pie from south-central Germany. It is served in the fall when the local winemakers open a cafe-like area called a Besenwirtschaft in their barn or garage to serve the new wine for a small fee. To let people know when they are open, they hang a straw broom over the doorway. Recipe & Photo: allrecipes.com

Time 2h

Number Of Ingredients 8

6 lb onions, sliced
4 slice bacon
16 oz sour cream
4 eggs
2 Tbsp all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp caraway seeds
1 pkg pastry for 9" double-crust pie

Steps:

  • 1. Place the prepared dough in a large pizza pan, making sure dough extends up the sides of the pan.
  • 2. In a large skillet, saute the onion until translucent and pour the cooked onion into a large mixing bowl. (May have to saute in several shifts.)
  • 3. Place the bacon in the same skillet and cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, chop and add to onion; mix well.
  • 4. Stir in the sour cream. In a separate bowl, beat eggs to break up yolks; mix into pie mixture. Add flour to thicken; add salt.
  • 5. Mix well and pour mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle top with caraway seeds.
  • 6. Bake in a preheated 425-degree oven for about 1 hour, or until onions start to turn golden brown on top.

Not a fan of this recipe. The onion filling was bland and the crust was soggy. I think I'll stick to my usual onion pie recipe.

I've made this Zwiebelkuchen several times and it's always a hit! I love the combination of sweet onions, savory bacon, and creamy cheese. It's the perfect comfort food for a cold night.

This Zwiebelkuchen was a bit too salty for my taste. I think I'll reduce the amount of salt in the onion mixture next time.

I love this Zwiebelkuchen recipe! It's so easy to make and it always turns out perfect. The crust is flaky and the onion filling is flavorful and savory. I usually add a bit of caraway seeds to the onion mixture for extra flavor.

Followed the recipe exactly and it was a disaster. The crust was too thick and the onion filling was watery. I ended up throwing it away.

This recipe was easy to follow and the Zwiebelkuchen turned out great! I used a mix of yellow and red onions, and I added a bit of garlic powder to the onion mixture for extra flavor. It was a hit with my family!

This Zwiebelkuchen was a hit at our party! Everyone loved it. I used a combination of sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheese, which gave it a really nice flavor. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Just tried this recipe and it turned out amazing! The only thing I did differently was use a store-bought pie crust to save time. The onion mixture was flavorful and the cheese melted perfectly. Will definitely make this again!

This Zwiebelkuchen recipe is a definite winner! The flavors of the caramelized onions, bacon, and cheese blend perfectly together, and the crust is flaky and golden brown. I'll definitely be making this again and again.
