Bread Machine Challah image

Adapted from my mother-in-law's challah recipe.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/4 c warm water
5 large egg yolks
1 tsp salt
1/3 c oil
4 1/4 c bread flour
1/2 c sugar
1 Tbsp active dry yeast for bread machine
1 c raisins or chopped apricots
1 large egg, slightly beaten
2 Tbsp poppy seeds or sesame seeds for top of loaf

Steps:

  • 1. Follow directions for making dough in your bread machine. Using first 7 ingredients layer them in bread machine pan. Turn on machine. Add raisins or apricots when dough begins to form.
  • 2. When dough cycle is complete remove dough from machine. Divide in 2 halves. From each half form 3 ropes. Braid 3 ropes into a loaf. Repeat with second 3 ropes. Place loaves on greased cookie sheet. Cover. Let dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
  • 3. Brush the challah with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or a combination of both. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
