BROILED STAR FRUIT IN GINGER
Fresh Star Fruit is one of the things I miss most about living in Guam. Carambola (Star Fruit) looks just like a star when sliced. The skin is a glossy golden yellow when ripe, its matching flesh beautifully translucent and dotted occasionally with a dark seed. When ripe, it is juicy and fragrant. Its flavor, depending on the variety, can range from exotically sweet to refreshingly tart. In general, the broader set the ribs, the sweeter the fruit. This recipe is from a Martha Stewart cookbook. Most of the time listed is cooling time for the ginger broth.

Tips:
- Choose star fruits that are ripe and firm, with a bright yellow color.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the star fruits into thin slices, as this will help them to absorb the sugar syrup more easily.
- If you are using a spice mix, be sure to taste it before adding it to the sugar syrup, to ensure that it is not too spicy.
- Allow the star fruit slices to cool completely in the sugar syrup before storing them, as this will help to prevent them from becoming too soft.
- Store the preserved star fruit slices in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
Conclusion:
Preserved star fruit, also known as five-finger or carambola, is a delicious and versatile treat that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Whether you enjoy it as a snack, use it as a topping for desserts, or add it to savory dishes, preserved star fruit is sure to please. With its unique flavor and beautiful appearance, preserved star fruit is a great way to add a touch of elegance to any occasion.
