BASIC POOR MAN'S SHEPHERD'S PIE

Basic Poor Man's Shepherd's Pie image

I used to call this Mashed Potato Casserole growing up, but ever since I started making it for my husband and others they all seem to recognize it as a version of Shepherd's Pie. Now that I've tried my hand at Shepherd's Pie, I can see the resemblance! So I've renamed this "Poor Man's Shepherd's Pie", as I think it's much simpler, much cheaper, and much easier to make than most Shepherd's Pie recipes. Enjoy!

Comforting Poor Man's Shepherd's Pie image

I got this recipe from a friend of mine years and years ago. It's one of my DH's favorites. It's been a while since I made it though, so I'm guessing at the time to bake.

GRANDMA'S POOR MAN'S PIE

Grandma's Poor Man's Pie image

This is an even simpler recipe that I grew up with (I've looked at the other recipes for Poor Man's Pie and Sugar Cream Pie - the other name for this type pie.) My grandmother's recipe was a 2-2/3-3 formula. It was called Poor Man's Pie because farmers always had the ingredients handy.

Provided by ganymede

Categories     Pie

Time 35m

Yield 1 Pie, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups heavy cream (Whipping Cream)
2/3 cup sugar (you can use white or brown, but Grandma always used white.)
3 tablespoons flour
butter, pats
nutmeg

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350º.
  • Mix the cream, sugar, and flour.
  • Pour into an unbaked 8" pie shell.
  • Float several thin pats of butter on top.
  • Sprinkle with ground nutmeg.
  • Bake at 350º for 30-45 minutes or until top is a nice golden brown.
  • Chill, then refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, use ground beef with a higher fat content, such as 80/20.
  • To save time, you can use frozen vegetables instead of fresh.
  • If you don't have Worcestershire sauce, you can substitute soy sauce or beef broth.
  • If you want a thicker gravy, add a tablespoon of cornstarch or flour to the mixture before simmering.
  • Serve the shepherd's pie with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a side salad.

Conclusion:

Poor man's shepherd's pie is a classic comfort food dish that is easy to make and budget-friendly. It is a great way to use up leftover vegetables and ground beef. This dish can be customized to your liking by adding different vegetables, spices, or cheeses. It is a hearty and satisfying meal that is perfect for a cold winter night.
