We have it quite often, but it's tradition to have this pie on the menu during the holidays. -Fay Harrington, Seneca, Missouri

POOR MAN'S APPLE COBBLER

Poor Man's Apple Cobbler image

Have a dessert craving and not sure what to make? Try this super simple apple cobbler. Made with self-rising flour and canned pie filling, you probably already have the ingredients in your pantry. The pie filling is dolloped on top but the crust magically bakes around it. This comes out of the oven with a beautiful golden brown...

Provided by Shawna Payne

Categories     Fruit Desserts

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 c granulated sugar
1 c self-rising flour
1 can(s) pie filling (apple, cherry, or peach) or fresh fruit (21 oz)
1 stick butter, unsalted
1 c milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2. Melt butter in a 9x13 (preferably glass) baking dish. Do this by placing it in the oven while it preheats.
  • 3. Mix sugar, flour, vanilla, and milk in a mixing bowl.
  • 4. Pour mixture into baking dish over the butter. Do not mix with butter.
  • 5. Spoon in apples or your fruit of choice in random spots.
  • 6. Bake for 45 minutes.
  • 7. The crust will rise around apples. Serve. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Use a variety of vegetables to create a flavorful and colorful pie.
  • Do not overcook the vegetables, as they will become mushy.
  • Be sure to drain the vegetables well before adding them to the pie crust, as excess moisture will make the pie soggy.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the vegetables into uniform pieces, which will help them cook evenly.
  • Season the vegetables with salt, pepper, and other herbs and spices to taste.
  • Use a pre-made pie crust to save time, or make your own crust from scratch using a simple recipe.
  • Be sure to preheat the oven before baking the pie, as this will help the crust to cook evenly.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  • Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving, as this will help it to set.

Conclusion:

Poor man's pie is a delicious and budget-friendly meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to use up leftover vegetables and it is also a good source of vitamins and minerals.
