POLYNESIAN WATERMELON DRINK ('OTAI)

Polynesian Watermelon Drink ('Otai) image

''Otai' is a fruit drink which originated in Tonga and is usually made as a summertime refreshment. It is a blend of water, coconut milk, and any variety of pulped tropical fruit such as coconut, watermelon, mango, and pineapple but is almost always watermelon as it is plentiful in Tonga. A small amount of sugar may be added, although the recipe is considerably sweet on its own. I lived in Sydney many moons ago and the Polynesian families drank this by the gallons in the summer. Soooo refreshing and yummy! Serve over ice cubes.

Tips:

  • Choose seedless watermelons for a smoother drink. If using a watermelon with seeds, make sure to remove them before blending.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor. Bottled lime juice can be used in a pinch, but it won't taste as good.
  • Add sugar or honey to taste. The amount of sugar you add will depend on how sweet your watermelon is.
  • Serve the drink immediately after making it. It will start to lose its flavor after a few hours.

Conclusion:

Polynesian watermelon drink, also known as otai, is a refreshing and delicious summer drink. It is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The combination of watermelon, lime juice, and sugar creates a sweet and tangy flavor that is sure to please. Otai is also a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium. So next time you are looking for a healthy and refreshing drink, give otai a try.
