Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 4

water
2 tsp salt (optional)
1 Tbsp white vinegar
4 eggs

Steps:

  • 1. Put 1 1/2 inches of water in a deep large skillet and bring to a boil.
  • 2. Add vinegar to water and salt if using. The salt makes them firmer and less shiny. The vinegar helps hold them together.
  • 3. One at a time, break eggs into a saucer and slip into barely simmering water, keeping eggs as separated as possible.
  • 4. Cover skillet until egg whites coat over yolks.
  • 5. Remove cover. Cook 3 to 5 minutes until whites are firm but the yolks are still soft when touched with the back of spoon.
  • 6. With a slotted spoon or pancake turner, lift each egg from the water and rest on a folded paper towel to absorb excess water.
  • 7. Trim away the loose thin whites and place of serving plate or recipe calling for poached egg.

Tips:

  • Use fresh eggs: Fresh eggs will poach more evenly and hold their shape better.
  • Bring the water to a gentle simmer before adding the eggs: This will help the eggs to cook evenly without overcooking.
  • Add a splash of vinegar to the water: This will help the eggs to hold their shape and prevent them from sticking to the pan.
  • Crack the eggs into a small bowl before adding them to the water: This will help to prevent the eggs from breaking.
  • Gently slide the eggs into the water: Do not drop them in, as this can cause them to break.
  • Cook the eggs for 3-4 minutes for a runny yolk, or 4-5 minutes for a set yolk.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the eggs from the water: This will help to prevent the eggs from breaking.
  • Serve the eggs immediately: Poached eggs are best served immediately, as they will start to toughen up if they are left to sit.

Conclusion:

Poaching eggs is a simple and versatile cooking technique that can be used to create a variety of delicious dishes. With a little practice, you can poach eggs perfectly every time. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy breakfast, lunch, or dinner, give poached eggs a try!
