OVERNIGHT LAYERED FRUIT SALAD

Overnight Layered Fruit Salad image

This recipe reminds me of the old "dinner on the ground" picnics from church during my childhood! It is a fruit version of the ever popular 7-Layer Salad. It should be made at least 8 hours ahead of time. It features oranges, apples and grapes atop a bed of shredded lettuce. Prep time and cooking time does not include the 8 hour chilling time! From Jack Reynolds in the Master Gardner Cookbook

Categories     < 30 Mins

Time 20m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cups iceberg lettuce, shredded, well-drained and dry
2 navel oranges
2 golden delicious apples, unpeeled and thinly sliced
2 cups green seedless grapes
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup sour cream
1 cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded (4 oz)

Steps:

  • Place the shredded lettuce in a deep 2-quart glass serving bowl.
  • Peel and section the oranges over a bowl, reserving the juice. Combine apple slices and orange juice; toss to coat. Layer apple slices over the lettuce; top with the orange sections and grapes.
  • Combine mayonnaise and sour cream in a small bowl; stir well. Spread mayonnaise mixture over salad, sealing to the edge of the bowl. Sprinkle with cheese. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, ripe fruits: The quality of your fruit will significantly impact the salad's overall taste. Look for fruits that are free of blemishes and bruises and have a vibrant color.
  • Use a variety of fruits: The more diverse the selection of fruits, the more complex and flavorful the salad will be. Try to include a mix of sweet, sour, and tart fruits.
  • Cut the fruits evenly: This will ensure that they cook evenly and absorb the flavors of the dressing consistently.
  • Layer the fruits in a clear glass bowl: This will allow you to showcase the beautiful colors of the fruits and make the salad more visually appealing.
  • Cover the salad tightly and refrigerate overnight: This will give the fruits time to absorb the flavors of the dressing and become tender.
  • Serve the salad chilled: This will help to keep the flavors fresh and prevent the fruits from becoming too mushy.

Conclusion:

This overnight layered fruit salad is a simple yet elegant dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make, customizable, and always a crowd-pleaser. The combination of fresh, ripe fruits and a tangy dressing creates a light and refreshing salad that is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
