APPLE-CINNAMON OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST

Categories     Fruit     Brunch

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 loaf challah, sliced 1" thick
3-5 apples, sliced
2 cups dark brown sugar
8 eggs
3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup half & half
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier

Steps:

  • Combine the syrup, butter and brown sugar in a saucepan and simmer gently until the sugar melts. Pour this mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x12" casserole dish. Layer the apples over the sugar mixture, sprinkle with cinnamon, and place the bread slices over the apples. Beat together the eggs, milk, half & half, vanilla, spices, and Grand Marnier. Pour the custard over the bread. Cover the dish and let stand overnight in refrigerator. The following morning, preheat oven to 350F. Uncover the casserole dish and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Stale bread works best: Slightly stale bread will soak up the egg mixture better and result in a more evenly cooked French toast.
  • Use a good quality bread: The better the bread, the better the French toast. Look for a bread that is slightly dense, such as a French baguette or a sourdough loaf.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Cook the French toast in batches so that it has plenty of room to cook evenly. Overcrowding the pan will result in soggy French toast.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: Medium heat will help the French toast cook evenly without burning.
  • Flip the French toast only once: Flipping the French toast too often will break it up. Once the bottom side is golden brown, carefully flip it over and cook until the other side is golden brown.
  • Serve the French toast immediately: French toast is best served hot and fresh. Top it with your favorite toppings, such as butter, syrup, fruit, or whipped cream.
