Time 20m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

5 cups frozen broccoli florets
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon butter
2 green onions, sliced
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon grated orange peel

Steps:

  • Place broccoli and water in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave on high for 6-8 minutes or until broccoli is tender; drain.
  • Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt butter. Cook onions in butter for 1 minute.
  • In a small bowl, combine the orange juice, brown sugar, cornstarch and salt until smooth. Stir into saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
  • Stir in orange peel; toss broccoli with sauce.

Tips:

  • Select vibrant broccoli: Choose broccoli crowns that are deep green in color and have tightly closed florets. Avoid crowns with yellowing or wilted florets.
  • Prepare the florets evenly: Cut the broccoli into uniform florets to ensure even cooking. Aim for florets that are about 1-2 inches in size.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When roasting the broccoli, make sure to spread the florets in a single layer on the baking sheet. Overcrowding can prevent even cooking and result in soggy broccoli.
  • Roast at a high temperature: High heat helps to caramelize the natural sugars in the broccoli, resulting in a slightly charred and flavorful exterior.
  • Make the orange glaze while the broccoli roasts: This allows the flavors to meld and thicken, creating a delicious glaze that perfectly complements the broccoli.
  • Toss the broccoli in the glaze: Once the broccoli is roasted and the glaze is ready, toss the broccoli in the glaze to coat it evenly. This will ensure that each floret is coated in the flavorful glaze.
  • Garnish before serving: Before serving, sprinkle the glazed broccoli with sesame seeds, chopped nuts, or fresh herbs for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal.

Conclusion:

Orange glazed broccoli is a simple yet delicious side dish that can be enjoyed as part of a healthy and balanced meal.
