GRANDMA'S OLD FASHIONED BREAD PUDDING WITH VANILLA SAUCE RECIPE - (3.9/5)

Grandma's Old Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce Recipe - (3.9/5) image

Provided by francesn

Number Of Ingredients 15

PUDDING:
4 cups white bread, cubed, about 8 slices
1/2 cup raisins
2 cups milk
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
SAUCE:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 tablespoon vanilla

Steps:

  • PUDDING: Heat oven to 350°F. Combine bread and raisins in large bowl. Combine milk and 1/4 cup butter in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted, about 4 to 7 minutes. Pour milk mixture over bread; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in all remaining pudding ingredients. Pour into greased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until set in center. SAUCE: Combine all sauce ingredients except vanilla in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until mixture thickens and comes to a full boil, about 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in vanilla. To serve, spoon warm pudding into individual dessert dishes; serve with sauce. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

Tips:

  • Use whole milk: Whole milk will give your pudding a richer, creamier flavor than skim or low-fat milk. For a decadent pudding, whisk in some heavy cream.
  • Whisk frequently: Whisking the pudding constantly as it cooks will help prevent lumps and ensure a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Don't overcook the pudding: The pudding is done when it has thickened and coats the back of a spoon. Overcooked pudding will be thick and rubbery.
  • Chill the pudding before serving: Chilling the pudding for at least 2 hours, or overnight, will allow it to thicken and develop its full flavor.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings: Serve the pudding with whipped cream, fresh fruit, or a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder.

Conclusion:

This classic vanilla pudding recipe is an easy and delicious dessert that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With its creamy texture and rich flavor, it's a perfect treat for any occasion. Whether you're serving it as a simple dessert or using it as the base for a more elaborate creation, this vanilla pudding is sure to please.
