OATMEAL PIE

Oatmeal Pie image

This delicious pie recipe came from my mother. My husband especially enjoys it during the holidays. I have shared the pie crust with many others because it's flaky and so easy to roll out. We even use it at our children's school when apple pies are made for a fund-raiser.

OLD-FASHION OATMEAL PIE

Old-Fashion Oatmeal Pie image

This great pie recipe goes back over 100 years. The recipe came from my grandmother's grandmother who was living in Charleston, South Carolina during the 1860's. Family history has it, that during the Civil War, since pecans were in short supply in the South, oatmeal was substituted for the traditional pecan pie and the results were astonishing. Now served at every family gathering since that time.

Time 1h15m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (9 inch) pie crusts
4 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup light corn syrup
1/8-1/4 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal (uncooked)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Beat eggs until frothy.
  • Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl.
  • Add eggs; mix well.
  • Add corn syrup, melted butter, and vanilla.
  • Mix oatmeal.
  • Pour into uncooked shell.
  • Bake for 45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use rolled oats, not instant oats. Instant oats will make the pie too mushy.
  • To make the pie crust, use a food processor or blender to grind the oats into a fine powder. This will help the crust hold together better.
  • Be sure to press the crust firmly into the pie pan. This will help prevent it from cracking.
  • Bake the pie at a high temperature for a short amount of time. This will help the crust get crispy and the filling to set.
  • Let the pie cool completely before serving. This will help the filling to firm up.

Conclusion:

Oatmeal pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With its simple ingredients and classic flavor, this pie is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it. So next time you're looking for a sweet treat, give oatmeal pie a try!
