NEW YORK PUSHCART ONIONS (FOR HOT DOGS)

New York Pushcart Onions (For Hot Dogs) image

I am a Canadian who spent 6 winters in Florida, and while there I met a person from New York (Brian). I did the cooking for most parties at the park, including snacks for our golf group which met twice a week after golf. Brian told me about the Push Cart Onions and I tried them with the group. They loved them. You can play with this recipe to suit your taste. Add more or less sugar, maybe a little more hot sauce, etc.

NEW YORK SYSTEM HOT WIENER SAUCE I

New York System Hot Wiener Sauce I image

This hearty, flavorful wiener sauce is like the kind you'll find in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It may be frozen until ready for use. Use premium grilled wieners cooked in butter, steamed hot dog buns and the fancy mustard of your choice. Spread with mustard, the sauce, chopped onions and celery salt... in that order. If you have a delicate digestive system, use with caution.

NEW YORK-STYLE HOT DOGS

New York-Style Hot Dogs image

Nothing says summer like a hot dog! It's one of those foods that kick-starts a season, and a NY-style dog is always my first choice. I have such great memories of living in New York City and having a hot dog at a baseball game, or for a late-night snack or just grabbing one from a cart while walking around the city. Once I moved to California I had to learn how to make the iconic sweet onions coated in tangy tomato sauce myself. Now the traditional New York-style hot dog can welcome me to summer every year.

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 small sweet onions, such as Maui or Vidalia, each about 5 ounces, thinly sliced
Kosher salt
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
4 hot dogs
4 hot dog buns

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. When the oil is hot, stir in the onions and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring every minute or so, until the onions have softened and begin to caramelize, about 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, stirring until the onions are completely coated. Cook until the tomato paste deepens in color, about 1 minute. Stir in the vinegar, scraping any browned bits off the bottom of the pan. Stir in 1 cup of water, the sugar and garlic powder. Raise the heat to medium and bring to a rapid simmer. Reduce the heat to low and gently simmer until the sauce reduces and thickens enough so a spoon leaves behind a trail, 10 to 12 minutes. Season with salt to taste.
  • While the onions simmer, place the hot dogs on a baking sheet and bake until heated through and they begin to brown on the bottoms, about 10 minutes, flipping once about halfway through the cooking time. If you like, open the hot dog buns and toast the buns alongside the dogs for the last 2 minutes of cooking.
  • Place the hot dogs in the buns and top with the onions. Serve immediately.

NEW YORK HOT DOG CART ONION SAUCE

New York Hot Dog Cart Onion Sauce image

Born in the Bronx, raised in Queens. My father worked for Pan Am in the day (data Control), drove a New York Cab at night, and on the weekends he owned a New York Hot Dog Cart. Before he passed away in February of 2004, he did give me the recipe to the Onion Sauce. When everybody else is saying to use pasta sauce, and this and that, the truth is there are only six ingredients. Bobby Flay is about the only one who got it close. In New York a true New York Hot Dog ordered from a cart is, Nathan Hot Dogs, Mustard, Onion Sauce, and topped with Sauerkraut. I wanted to write this recipe for a long time but after seeing so many Onion Sauce recipes, and hearing how so many people are from New York, it is time to post the original recipe.

NEW YORK STYLE HOT DOG TOPPING

New York Style Hot Dog Topping image

I found this recipe in Family Circle magazine. I have not tried it but, I'm posting it for safe keeping.

Provided by internetnut

Categories     Low Protein

Time 30m

Yield 2 cups, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb sweet onion, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/3 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large nonstick skillet, cook onions in the oil over medium-low heat, covered, for 15 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup water, the ketchup, sugar, red pepper flakes and salt. Cook, covered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spoon about 1/4 cup topping over each hot dog.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality hot dogs. The best hot dogs are made with fresh, high-quality meat. Look for hot dogs that are made with 100% beef or pork, and avoid hot dogs that contain fillers or preservatives.
  • Grill or fry your hot dogs. Grilled or fried hot dogs have a more flavorful and smoky taste than boiled hot dogs. If you're grilling your hot dogs, cook them over medium heat until they are slightly charred. If you're frying your hot dogs, heat a pan over medium heat and cook the hot dogs until they are browned and crispy.
  • Use a variety of toppings. The classic New York-style hot dog is topped with sauerkraut, brown mustard, and chopped onions. However, you can also add other toppings, such as relish, ketchup, chili, or cheese. Experiment until you find a combination of toppings that you like.
  • Serve your hot dogs on a toasted bun. A toasted bun will help to hold all of the toppings in place and will add a bit of extra flavor to the hot dog.

Conclusion:

New York-style hot dogs are a delicious and iconic part of American cuisine. They are easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect New York-style hot dog at home. So next time you're craving a hot dog, give this recipe a try!
