MY MOM'S WHITE SAUCE

My Mom's White Sauce image

This sauce was my mom's and it's very good , I like to use this sauce for my creamed potatoes and pea's. You can combine white sauce with chicken broth if you are making a white sauce to serve over chicken and noodles. For chicken pie, you can use chicken broth to thicken so it is like gravy. This white sauce is wonderful for topping meat or noodles. I add cheese to this white sauce when I'm making homemade macaroni and cheese. White sauce can be used as a base for lot of dishes like cream & cheese sauces , soups , pasta sauces , scalloped potatoes..etc.

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 tablespoon(s) butter
3 tablespoon(s) flour
1/4 teaspoon(s) salt and pepper or to taste
1 1/2 to 2 cup(s) milk

Steps:

  • In a sauce pan make roux by mixing the butter and flour together over med heat.
  • Add milk and mix all together with a wire whisk until smooth.
  • Bring to a boil on stove for 1 minute , stirring constantly ; until to desired thickness.
  • I found it has better flavor if you cook it for 10 minute ; that will get it thicker and cook the flour taste out. If you want a really thick white sauce just increase the amount and flour and butter to 4 TBS with the same amount of milk.
  • Note: sometimes I add just a hint of garlic powder along with the salt and lots of pepper. (Taste it to make sure it's seasoned to your liking)
  • Add some cheese, garlic powder, chives, thyme, oregano, basil. and mushrooms and you have a perfect alfredo sauce.
