MAMA'S BLACKBERRY COBBLER

Mama's Blackberry Cobbler image

Alabama has some tasty fresh blackberries. Decades ago, my mama was heading out to pick blackberries to make a cobbler, but she ended up going to the hospital to have me instead. This is her mama's recipe. The blackberries start on top, but then end up tucked under a golden brown crust after it's baked. -Lisa Allen, Joppa, Alabama

MOM'S FRUIT COBBLER

Mom's Fruit Cobbler image

This is the recipe my mom uses on both blueberry cobblers and peach cobblers. I am sure it would work with practically any fruit you wanted to try. When using blueberries, adding a little lemon zest/extract brings out the brightness in the flavors. When using peaches, adding some cinnamon pairs nicely. You may find adding a bit more self-rising flour to the sugar mixture in step #3 will help if you have runny cobbler

Tips:

  • Use fresh, ripe fruit: This will give your cobbler the best flavor. If you're using frozen fruit, thaw it completely before using.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing will make the cobbler tough. Just mix until the ingredients are combined.
  • Use a variety of fruits: This will give your cobbler a more complex flavor. Some good combinations include apples and cinnamon, peaches and blueberries, or strawberries and rhubarb.
  • Don't skimp on the sugar: Sugar helps to thicken the cobbler and give it a nice crust. If you're using tart fruit, you may need to add more sugar.
  • Bake the cobbler until the crust is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling: This usually takes about 30-40 minutes.
  • Serve the cobbler warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream: This is the best way to enjoy it!

Conclusion:

Fruit cobbler is a classic dessert that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious cobbler that is perfect for any occasion. So next time you're looking for a sweet treat, give fruit cobbler a try. You won't be disappointed!
