A friend of mine said he had not had home made beef stew for 5 years, every since his grandmother died. So I decided to make him some beef stew just like his grandmothers... well somebody's grandmother anyway. This goes great with garlic toast or even some artichoke bruschetta.

Tips to Make the Best Beef Stew with Marsala Wine

  • Choose high-quality beef: Opt for a chuck roast, brisket or short ribs for the stew. These cuts have a good amount of fat and connective tissue, which will break down and make the stew tender and flavorful.
  • Sear the beef before stewing: Searing the beef in a hot pan before adding it to the stew will help to develop its flavor and create a rich fond in the pan. This fond will add depth and complexity to the stew.
  • Use a good quality Marsala wine: The type of Marsala wine you use will have a big impact on the flavor of the stew. Choose a dry or semi-dry Marsala wine that has a nutty, slightly sweet flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the pot: When adding the beef and vegetables to the pot, make sure not to overcrowd it. If the pot is too crowded, the beef and vegetables will not cook evenly and the stew will be watery.
  • Simmer the stew for at least 1 hour: The longer you simmer the stew, the more tender the beef will become and the more flavorful the sauce will be. Aim to simmer the stew for at least 1 hour, or up to 2 hours for even more tender beef.
  • Serve the stew with your favorite sides: Beef stew with Marsala wine is a hearty and flavorful dish that can be served with a variety of sides. Some popular options include mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or crusty bread.
