MARBLE SQUARES

Marble Squares image

Used to make these years ago and just started making them again. Again, from the Philly Cream Cheese cookbook! The recipe calls for a jelly roll pan which I haven't had in years , so I just use a 9x13 pan. SOOO yummy. Again , eating smaller squares means less guilt! This is a favorite of my co-workers too. Hope you enjoy it!

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 oz softened cream cheese
2 1/3 c sugar
3 eggs
3/4 c water
1/2 c margarine
1 1/2 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 c flour
1/2 c sour cream
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
6 oz semi sweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • 1. In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup sugar and softened cream cheese until well blended.
  • 2. Blend in one egg.
  • 3. In a sauce pan, combine water, margarine, and chocolate squares;bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  • 4. Add (to chocolate mixture) combined remaining sugar and flour, mixing well.
  • 5. Blend in remaining eggs, sour cream, baking soda and salt.
  • 6. Pour into greased jelly roll pan (15x10) OR 9x13 pan.
  • 7. Spoon cream cheese mixture over chocolate batter, cutting through with a knife several times for marble effect.
  • 8. Sprinkle with chocolate chip pieces.
  • 9. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • 10. Cool and cut into squares.

Tips:

  • Use room-temperature butter for the best results. This will help the butter cream together with the sugar and flour evenly, resulting in a smooth and consistent batter.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing can result in a tough and dense cake. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Be careful not to overbake the cake. Overbaking can result in a dry and crumbly cake. Bake just until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting it. This will help the frosting set properly and prevent it from melting.
  • For a more pronounced marble effect, use two different colors of batter. You can also add a swirl of food coloring to the batter before baking.

Conclusion:

Marble squares are a classic dessert that are perfect for any occasion. They are easy to make and always a hit with guests. With their rich chocolate and vanilla flavors, these squares are sure to be a favorite. So next time you're looking for a delicious and easy dessert, give marble squares a try. You won't be disappointed!
