Quick and Easy Hawaiian Pork Chops. Pan fried pork chops simmered in a sweet and tangy Hawaiian sauce. Ready in under 25 minutes!

Provided by Kelley Simmons

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 tablespoons oil (divided)
salt and pepper
1 1/2 pounds thin pork chops (there were about 8 thinly sliced pork chops in my package)
1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 15 ounce can pineapple slices (including the liquid), divided
3 cloves garlic (minced)
1 teaspoon ginger (minced)
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
chopped parsley for garnish (if desired)

Steps:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet.
  • Season pork chops on both sides with salt and pepper. Add pork to the hot skillet and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until each side is nice and browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • In a large measuring cup combine soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar and only the pineapple juice (reserve the slices for later). Set aside.
  • Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the large skillet. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for 1 minute.
  • Pour in the sauce ingredients and bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the pork back to the sauce.
  • In a small bowl mix together cornstarch and water.
  • Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the skillet and stir.
  • Add in the reserved pineapple slices and simmer for 10 minutes or until sauce is thickened and pork reaches 145 degrees. The thin pork do not take very long.
  • Serve immediately with chopped parsley for garnish, if desired.

Categories     Entree

Time 5h45m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 to 5 pound pork butt
2 1/2 tablespoons Hawaiian salt (You can substitute kosher salt, but Hawaiian sea salt is readily available online.)
2 tablespoons liquid smoke
1 banana leaf (substitute 4 to 5 whole, unpeeled bananas)

Steps:

  • Trim any excess fat from the roast.
  • Make several shallow long cuts along the roast or pierce liberally with a fork. (This allows the salt and liquid smoke to penetrate the meat.)
  • Rub with salt and liquid smoke. Wrap the roast with banana leaf or in the absence of same, place whole bananas on top of meat .
  • Cut the ribs from the ti leaves and wrap over the banana leaf. Substitute aluminum foil, if ti leaves are not available. (Ti leaves, however, can often be obtained from your local florist especially on the West Coast).
  • Tie the leaves securely with twine.
  • Roast in a 325 F to 350 F oven for about 45 minutes per pound. When the meat is done, remove the ti leaves, the banana leaf (or bananas) and shred the pork.

LUAU PORK

I got this recipe out of a convection oven cookbook and I have had excellent results every time I have made it. It produces a very nice Hawaiian-type pulled pork. It is very good for theme parties (luaus, tropical, etc.). The leftovers (if any) make delicious sandwiches.

LUAU PORK CHOPS

Luau Pork Chops image

My boyfriend LOVES pineapple so I set out to create a main dish that incorporated his favorite food. I serve this over rice seasoned with butter and a soy sauce (1 T butter and 2 t of light soy sauce per cup of uncooked rice). I add them right to the rice cooker in the beginning and it always turns out yummy. Also, when I can find it, I buy a frozen diced onion, red and green pepper mix. Sam's Club carries it occasionally and it's a terrific recipe staple!

Tips:

  • To ensure your pork chops remain succulent, aim for an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use a meat thermometer to accurately measure the temperature.
  • Tenderizing the pork chops before cooking is a great way to enhance their texture. You can achieve this by using a meat mallet or a fork to pierce the surface of the chops.
  • Feel free to adjust the seasonings to suit your taste preferences. Experiment with different herbs and spices to create a unique flavor profile.
  • Pineapple juice not only adds a tropical flavor to the dish but also helps tenderize the pork chops. If you don't have pineapple juice on hand, you can substitute it with orange juice or apple juice.
  • To make the sauce thicker, mix a cornstarch slurry (equal parts cornstarch and water) and add it to the simmering sauce. This will help create a glossy and flavorful glaze.

Conclusion:

Luau pork chops are a delightful Hawaiian-inspired dish that combines tender pork chops with a sweet and tangy sauce. The use of pineapple juice and brown sugar imparts a unique tropical flavor, while the addition of ginger, garlic, and soy sauce adds depth and complexity. This dish is perfect for a casual dinner or a special occasion, and it's sure to impress your friends and family. Whether you prefer grilled, pan-fried, or baked pork chops, this recipe offers a versatile and delicious way to enjoy this classic dish.
